Bonsall is a small uplnad village and occupies tewo steep dales with beautiful walks between the two. It is situated about two miles south west of Matlock and stands around 650 feet above sea level.
In 1884, author MJB Baddley writes in 'The Peak District of Derbyshire', "Bonsall is a quaint and sweetly placed little village with a very picturesque little church, an in of the 17th century (The Kinds Head), a Cross still more ancient on a pedestal of some twenty steps, and drinking fountains innumerable. We may go far before we find a village combining so picturesque a situation with so much that is interesting in itself."

Very little seems to have changed from that description of around 120 years ago!
